CURRICULUM - CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

All diploma programmes at the Republic Polytechnic share the following general architecture:

Architecture

Regular Modules (26 Module Units)

Core General

A 10-module general education programme required to be taken by all diploma students at the polytechnic regardless of their intended specialization.

Core Discipline

A set of modules that address the core issues of the broad discipline (such as science, engineering or information technology) of the diploma.

Core Specialisation

A set of modules that address the core issues of the specialization of the diploma.

Electives

A collection of modules identified as of general relevance to a diploma.

Freely Chosen

A scope of up to two modules given to the student to freely choose from all modules available at the polytechnic.

Student Project (2 Module Units)

A set of two activities for learning and practicing the processes of carrying out a long term organized plan for achieving a specific objective.

Creative Engagement (1 Module Unit)

A requirement for participation in diverse and multi-disciplinary activities aimed at developing students’ initiative, innovative spirit and creative potential.

Professional Profiling (1 Module Unit)

A requirement for profiling a subject of interest, with the objective of cultivating the ability to examine the factors that influence outcomes and bring in changes over time.

The Core General programme is compulsory for all students among over 4000 annually admitted for all diverse regular diploma programmes at RP. This is meant to raise each student to a level of “educatedness” expected from any educated individual by the society regardless of the domain of specialisation.

Five areas of knowledge are addressed in the Core General programme. They are, (a) basic sciences [explanatory narratives constructed by communities through rigorous evaluation]; (b) mathematical and computational methods [logical deductions and methods]; (c) culture - tribal [practices, beliefs, responsibilities, ownership, security etc]; (d) culture - commercial [economic issues, workplace practices, group dynamics]; and (e) cognitive processes [development of personal knowledge and community knowledge]

Similarly, the Core Discipline component is for the education expected of all professionals of the specific broad discipline associated with each diploma, such as engineering, information technology, or biological sciences. The set of modules in the Core Specialisation component distinguishes one diploma programme from another.

The Electives and Freely-Chosen components of the curriculum offer an opportunity for students to complement their knowledge developed through the core components by taking up modules in diverse domains.
